Geronimo!

I made my very first fur bear earlier this year. I had a kit that I got from the local teddy bear craft store… I would start off well, then get a bit discouraged, then have another crack a few months later. I really wanted to have him finished for the local Arts & Crafts Show, so I pushed on! I got there in the end!

Introducing… Geronimo. He was inspired by Matt Smith in Doctor Who. I made all his clothes, including the bow tie and fez, and I even made him a sonic screwdriver πŸ™‚

  • Fez – Tally’s Treasury has a tutorial on how to make a fez. I just scaled it down for my bear.
  • Bow Tie – The Littlest Studio has a tutorial on how to make a bow tie. Again, I just scaled it down.
  • Trousers – Shwin & Shwin has a pattern for some baby pants that I used as inspiration. I pretty much sat Geronimo on some paper and traced around his legs and used that.
  • Shirt – Nina Caporale has a tutorial on how to make a shirt for a bear, and I just added sleeves to it and used snaps for buttons.
  • Braces – I just used some scraps of fabric to make a tube then ironed it flat and used snaps to hold them in place.
  • Jacket – Lion Brand have a set you can knit, so just used this pattern πŸ™‚ I did lengthen the sleeves and I added some elbow pads too.
  • Sonic Screwdriver – I used scraps of white, gold/light brown, green and black and sewed it all up and added some elastic so he could hold it properly.

I’m very pleased to say that Geronimo won Champion Bear at the Arts & Crafts Show πŸ™‚

Gruffalo Cake

It’s my little girl’s 3rd birthday today, so I thought I would make her a Gruffalo Cake. We all love Julia Donaldson books at our house, so I thought this would be perfect!

I haven’t really done much cake decorating before, so I’m really chuffed with how this turned out. I made my own fondant, as we usually have a stash of marshmallows in the pantry to roast on the fire pit. I checked out instructions from RoseBakes.com and then went from there.

So this is a chocolate cake with purple spheres inside (I thought they could symbolise the purple prickles all over his back). I had left over batter when making the spheres, so used that to make patty cakes, and two of those are used for The Gruffalo’s ears. It’s all covered in yummy chocolate icing, and then decorated with the marshmallow fondant.

Yay! πŸ™‚

Exterminate!!!

I’ve been wanting to make a tea cosy for my small (2 cup) tea pot for a while now, so I thought I might try a Dalek to go with my T.A.R.D.I.S tea cosy πŸ™‚

I also tried crocheting my icord. Here’s some good instructions if you’d like to give it a go πŸ™‚ How to Crochet an I-Cord

I’ve written out a pattern if you’d like to make one too πŸ™‚

Trauma Teddies

Wow! I didn’t realise it has been so long since I have posted anything here. I keep meaning to, then other things pop up.

My son broke his arm last week, and when he was in the ambulance the paramedics gave him a knitted bear. This bear stayed with him throughout his x-rays, surgery, recovery and everything. It provided so much comfort for him.

I really wanted to replace the bear that was given to him, so another child could receive the same comfort during their sickness/injury. I started at one and today I am going to make a start on number four πŸ™‚

Below are some of my notes and links for future reference πŸ™‚

Trauma Teddy PatternΒ – External Link, the main difference I did was to knit the bear in one piece instead of two pieces… so when I got to the top of the head, I worked back down the head down to the feet and cast off there.

I also made a different arm because I wanted it to look more like a shirt. So I didn’t do the increases for the arms, instead, after I cast off I picked up 9 sts from the front and 9 sts from the back of the shirt. Here is a good video on how to do this. Then you knit as normal. The arm is 18 sts and you workΒ 34 rows and then cast off.

And then I used this method for stitching them up πŸ™‚

Rattle Socks

RecentlyΒ I was looking on Pinterest for activities for 3 month olds and I found rattle socks. I didn’t really want to buy them in case my little girl didn’t like them, so thought I’d make some instead. They are also a really good way to use the plastic eggs inside Kinder Surprises!

The Backson

My little boy has been a bit sick with a cold the last few days, so I thought I’d make him a toy to cheer him up. He really likes the Backson from the Winnie the Pooh movie, so I thought I’d give that a go.

The Backson

It’s a Giant creature with a tail
Here, I’ll draw Piglet in for scale
Its hide is like a shaggy rug
Its face a surly ugly mug
With two sharp horns atop its head
In between a mop of hair that’s red
And in its nose a ring of gold
It smells of monkey’s feet and mould
Its toes are black
Its fur is blue
I swear that all I tell you is not made up
The Backson!
